12 soldiers killed in Kunduz insider attack

AT-KABUL: Twelve Afghan soldiers were killed last night by two rogue colleagues, who were defected to the Taliban, in northeastern Kunduz province, said officials.

“Two soldiers, who were secretly helping the Taliban, have shot dead their 12 comrades in a check-post in Zakhil area of Kunduz city last night at around 12:00am [Tuesday],” Police Chief for 808 Police Zone in northeastern Afghanistan, Sher Aziz Kamawal, told Afghanistan Times.

He said that the incident took place when the soldiers were sleeping in the check-post and only the two “traitors” were patrolling the check-post and its surrounding areas. The police chief told Afghanistan Times that two officers after killing their comrades escaped from the check-post. They also took their weapons with them.

“Investigation has been launched in the case and currently the check-post is under control of the army. Operation started to arrest the defected soldiers and bring them to the court of justice,” he added.

While confirming the insider attack, the spokesman for Spinzar Zone’s Police said, “The two rogue soldiers handed over the check-post to the Taliban last night. After two hours of clashes, the check post was retaken by Afghan security forces.”

He said the defected soldiers fled the area with the Taliban militants. Twelve soldiers were killed and two others were wounded in the insider attack.

Kunduz is one of most insecure provinces in the country, where the insurgents have increased their attacks on check-posts in the past one year. Dasht-e- Archi and Qal-e-Zal is the most insecure districts in the province.
