12 killed in Badakhshan avalanche

AT-KABUL: At least 12 people were killed by an avalanche in north-eastern Badakhshan province on Saturday night, officials said.

The provincial police spokesman, Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai, said the victims were killed overnight when snow hit a village in Raghistan district.

He added that the dead included women and children who came from two families. He said only two members of the families survived the incident.

Reports of deadly avalanche have relatively been more in Badakhshan as the country has just entered its last winter month.

Overall, snowfall in Afghanistan this year has been low compared to its previous years.

A mountainous province, Badakhshan has remained vulnerable to natural disasters.
