15 de-miners abducted in Herat

AT-KABUL: A group of unidentified gunmen have abducted 15 de-miners of Halo Trust organization in Kohsan district of western Herat province, officials said on Saturday.

The de-miners and the four vehicles they were travelling in were seized by unknown gunmen in Shabash area of Kohsan district late on Friday afternoon.

Spokesman for the provincial governor, Jailani Farhad, said that security agencies are coordinating efforts with local elders to locate the hostages and release them.

Meanwhile the local police spokesman Abdul Rauf Ahmadi said the police chief and detectives had reached the area. “We are hopeful of rescuing the de-miners soon.”

So far no group has claimed responsibility for the abduction.

This is worth mentioning that in January, the Taliban insurgents in an attack killed four de-miners in southern Helmand province. The Taliban militants attacked the de-miners in Greshk district of the province when the de-miners were clearing landmines.
