One killed, 72 injured in Zabul blast

AT-KABUL: At least one person was killed and 72 others injured on Monday morning when a suicide bomber driving a vehicle full of explosives targeted the provincial council in southern Zabul province.

Police Security Chief, Ghulam Jailani Farahi, said the bomber rammed the mini-truck into the boundary wall of the provincial council complex at around 10:00 am (local time).

He said that 73 people, including 11 policemen and 16 women, were injured in the deadly blast. Most of the people were civilians and sustained light injuries. However, condition of the two persons was said to be ‘critical’.

He said that the wounded people were shifted to a hospital in Kandahar province.

However, the Presidential Palace said that one of the 73 injured persons has lost his life.

Chief of the Zabul provincial council, Ata Jan Haqbayan, said that four provincial council members and two guards were also injured in the blast. He said the blast was so heavy that it destroyed buildings of different government offices in the area.

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.

In the past two months, the Taliban has unleashed a series of deadly attacks in different parts of the country. According to the interior ministry, 11 out of 23 provinces are insecure.

Despite the government’s efforts to bring the insurgent groups to the table of talks through Pakistan, China and Arab countries, security situation in the country is deteriorating rapidly.

Afghan lawmakers have repeatedly expressed their concerns over insecurity and urged the National Unity Government to urge Pakistan to stop militants from crossing the Durand Line and eliminate their safe havens.
