Afghanistan, EU mull over governance, human rights

AT-KABUL: The second meeting between Afghan government and European Union was held Saturday in Kabul, discussing good governance in Afghanistan, human rights and migration.

First Lady, Rula Ghani said that Afghanistan and European Union have “common values” and the latter had played significant role in institutionalizing of these values.

She praised the European Union’s efforts in creating a democratic governance system in Afghanistan, saying that the government had its own responsibilities too.

“Fulfilling of commitments in providing the human rights is an important and national issue and the government of Afghanistan is responsible to fulfill the approved regulations and principles in this regard,” said the First Lady.

The first meeting between Afghanistan and the European Union was held in February, 2017 in Brussels. The work team of the two sides holds such meetings once a year and discusses important issues and offer suggestions.

Good governance in Afghanistan, human rights Afghan migrants were the matters discussed in this year’s meeting.

The European Union envoy in Afghanistan called human rights as an important principle for democracy and governance system.

“Human rights and democracy empowerment is the main principle of our agenda. The European Union believes that systems and societies will be long-lasting when democracy is institutionalized and human rights are respected.”

She added that the European Union would work jointly with the government of Afghanistan in resolving migrants’ problems.
