Armed groups illegally extract mines in Samangan: Official

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL:  Warlords and illegal armed groups illegally extract mines in northern Samangan province, said a local official.

Spokesman for the Samangan governor office, Seddiq Aziz, told Azadi Radio that illegal armed groups illegally extract coal mines in Dahan-e-Tor and Shabashak areas of Dara-e-Souf. “We are unable to stop the strong men from extracting mines,” he added.

He said that they have discussed the issue with the central government, but haven’t received any response yet. “A special military unit should be established to tackle illegal extraction of mines in the province,” he added.

According to sources in the province around 2,000 people, most of them children, are illegally extracting mines in Dara-e-Souf district of Samangan province.

Illegal and unprofessional extraction led to coal mine explosions in Smangan province last year which led around 30 people dead, while several others wounded.
