Clashes underway as Taliban try to capture Farah City

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Fierce fighting between Afghan security forces and the Taliban insurgents is underway in western Farah province, in which some areas have fallen to the Taliban, officials and residents said on Sunday.

Mohammad Daud Aram, head of the youth affairs department and resident of Bagh Pul, said the Taliban overran the Nawbahar and Berang Toot neighborhoods Saturday night.

Nawbahar is situated 12 kilometers northwest of Farah City and Bagh Pul is two kilometers west of provincial capital, which is increasingly under threat by the militants.

Confirming the report, Nasir Mehri, provincial spokesman, said security forces had made a tactical retreat from Nawbahar and Berang Toot. “Fighting is underway in BaghPul currently.”

He added dozen of Taliban insurgents were killed in Berang on Saturday night after Afghan fighter jet pounded their potions. “I assure the people that militants could not take control of the provincial capital,” he added.

The attack comes after the Taliban insurgents have launched numerous complex attacks in several parts of the country. This is for the 7th days that security forces fighting Taliban militants in Kunduz, but however, the Taliban militants are notclearedcompletely form the city so far.

“Several areas, including second and third police districts of Kunduz city were cleared of Taliban presence,” Mahfuzullah Akbari, regional police spokesman said.

However, he said that fighting between security forces and the Taliban insurgents are still underway.

More than 140 Taliban insurgents were killed and more than 60 other received injuries during clearance operation so far, he added.

Unfortunately, he said that 14 Afghan security forces were also killed and 19 other wounded so far.

Regarding civilian he said: “Taliban entered civilian houses and also killed some of them (civilian) in suspect of working with the government. The civilian killings are including women, children and elders.” However, he did not had exact numbers of those killed by the Taliban.

Moreover, in Kandahar province, 86 Taliban fighters were killed by the Afghan security forces within past 24 hours.

Provincial press office in a statement, said that Afghan security forces carried ground and air operations to targeted militants in different districts, in which 86 militants including three commanders were killed.
