ED: SOM ended with accusations

The Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) that was held for two days in Kabul city, ended amid some accusations mostly from the government side.

The meeting in which representatives from more than 50 countries and international organizations that are supporting Afghanistan reconstruction had participated, probed economic assistance to the country. The meeting mostly focused on the implementation of the last year’s commitments by the donor countries and organizations. The international community in the last year Brussels session had promised to donate 15 billion dollars to the government of Afghanistan until 2020.

The government seemed to be unhappy with the donor sides for not implementing some of their commitments so far. It accused the international community for not being attentive in balancing the rights of the international organizations to the policies of the Afghan government, employing advisers in the ministries based on requirements and some others.

The government is right in mentioning the said matters since the supporting countries and organizations had not been so serious in their commitments in these sectors. Some of the donors are not accountable to the government about the money they are expensing and their activities have not been transparent. The money that is spent in their projects and programs, is from the donation to Afghanistan and the poor nation will be questioned.

But, the government has not been so active as it claims. Corruption as the main and the head of problems still stands before against the people and government. This is the point that the international community has been frequently persisting to be tackled.

People’s and government’s lands are still grabbed by powerful individuals, mines and other natural sources are illegally extracted by irresponsible armed persons and groups, people’s rights are trampled and women are yet to get access to their rights.

People are uncourageous to invest in their country due to lack of security and other essentials, one of them power energy. Brain drain and getting money out of the country is speedily continuing. People, particularly those rich do not feel safe, kidnapping of investors and their family members especially in the industrial city of Herat is discouraging them to keep their money in the country.

These are the facts that should be accepted and be paid attention to. During the past three years of the unity government, people were not witnessing outstanding developments, and some projects that the government announces implementing were implemented before the current government took over.
