Flash floods kill 10 in Panjshir

By Farhad Naibkhel-KABUL: Flash floods have killed 10 people in northern Panjshir province and caused serious damage to property and livestock with sweeping out 300 houses, officials said Thursday.

“10 people, including two women lost their lives due to heavy floods,” provincial governor spokesman, Abdul Hodod Ali Mardan told Afghanistan Times. “The deluge has also destroyed over 20 villages and a Bazaar in Peshghor area in Hes-e-Awal district,” he said.

The floods that took place on Wednesday night at around 12:00 and 12:30, astonishingly caught people who were asleep, and lead to the closure of Panjshir main road, the spokesman added.

“Some 100 vehicles and tens of acres of agriculture lands destroyed in the floods.”

The moment floods overture the district, the residents helped each others to survive. “People were shouting to let know others of floods,” Mardan added, saying people climbed to hillside valley in Pshghor area, and it was very difficult as darkness covered all over.

The floods completely destroyed around 200 houses and over 100 shops in Peshghor area.

According to him, the floods occurred after malting of glaciers, causing a hillside in the surrounding mountain. The glaciers usually and naturally creating in the mountains of Panjshir, it is like a small lakes, but could be turned deadly sometimes as it melts due to hot weather, he elaborated.

However, he informed of a rescue and assistance team that already dispatched to the area.

The victims are in an anxious condition and being settled irregular in the hillside, he underlined

Spokesman of State Ministry for Disaster Management, Mohammad Omar Mohammadi in his face book, has confirmed the dead of 10 people in floods, writing 300 houses were completely destroyed in Peshghor area.  According to him, the figure is not unreliable, it could be changed.

Two helicopters and a rescue team has already there to help flood affected families, the spokesman added.

President Ashraf Ghani expressed his deepest condolence to the victim families, instructing related organs to take every available measure to help them. According to a statement issued by Presidential Palace, Ghani ordered immediate dispatching of rescue and assistance team to help the affected people.
