Govt. eyes solar power project in Daikundi

AT-KABUL: The government is planning to erect a solar energy plan with a capacity of more than five megawatts of electricity in Daikundi province, according to a government official.

The Minister of Energy and Water said on Thursday that a Chinese company will take on the entire phases of the solar project with the contract set to be signed soon. Asif Ghafoori said the project at a cost of $13.7 million will be inaugurated within a year and half. The solar plant will generate 5.5 megawatts of electricity for three districts in that province.

According to Ghafoori, the solar equipment has been designed to last for twenty five years.

This comes as Daikundi influential figures have called for hydropower projects to provide electricity to more districts and remote areas in the province.
