AT News Report

KABUL: Unknown gunmen shot dead a journalist in eastern Nangarhar province, said a local official.

Batikot district chief, Gholam Farooq, said that unknown gunmen shot dead Aqil Muhammad Wiqar, a local reporter of Spinghar radio, in his house the other night.

Nai, an organization supporting open media in Afghanistan, confirmed the incident. However, the organization said that Aqil Muhammad was targeted in a wedding ceremony in the district.

Nai denounced killing of the journalist in the strongest possible terms. The motive behind the killing is not clear yet. Nai called on the government to bring the perpetrators of the act to justice.

Aqel Muhammad Wiqar’s killing marked the first incident of violence against journalists in 2015.

Nai recently described 2014 as the deadliest year for journalists in Afghanistan. It said that eight journalists were killed over the past year.
