Kabul police declare security measures for foreign citizens

By Akhtar M. Nikzad-KABUL: Police said Tuesday that expats including foreign journalists can demand security services, if they think to face threats in the capital of Kabul.

Chief of criminal investigations at Kabul police Feraidon Ubaidi told Afghanistan Times that for better security of the foreign citizens, Kabul police ordered guesthouses to stay in close contacts with police to thwart unexpected threats.

“We officially asked the guesthouses and foreign families to inform police when they want to move from one place to another and if they are concerned about any unpredicted threats,” Ubaidi said.

Earlier, the Afghan journalists’ union had accused Kabul police of ordering foreign journalists not to walk in the city without bodyguards.

The journalists’ union termed the police measure against the Constitution and counted violation against access to information law.

“If police are concerned about threats against foreign citizens, we hope they seek other appropriate ways to keep security of the strangers” the union said.

It expressed deep concerns about accompanying of foreign journalists with bodyguards and said they are unable to walk anywhere with their bodyguards to cover the incidents. It urged Kabul police to eliminate the restriction against foreign journalists.

But Kabul police rejected allegations, saying that the order was not about compulsory bodyguards for foreign citizens merely providing security service in the critical condition.
