Peace council has called on Russia to undertake the role of mediating parleys

AT-KABUL: Afghanistan’s peace council hopes Russia will play a role in the peace process between the country and the insurgent Taliban. Russia is a powerful regional stakeholder and should be included in Afghanistan’s peace talks, an official at the High Peace Council said Tuesday.

Hajji Din Mohammad, deputy head of the council said that Moscow has an improving relation with Pakistan and can play a key role in the Afghan peace efforts.

The comments come after Russia showed interest to play mediation between Kabul, Washington and Taliban. Russia’s envoy for Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov said that it was the time for Afghans to abandon bloodshed.

“Russia is our neighbor, peace is not only important for Afghanistan, but is also in the regional benefit. Russia’s presence in the peace process is fruitful and we should use Russia,” Mohammad said.

Dawa Khan Minapal, deputy spokesperson for President Ghani, said that government would welcome other countries’ cooperation with the “Afghan-led peace process”.

But some political analysts seem pessimistic over Moscow’s role in peace process. “I don’t think Russia can play an effective role in the peace talks with Taliban. This is a good suggestion but not practical. Russia should feel responsible and should not be scared of its interests,” said political expert, Intezar Khadem.
