Political parties warn against election amid system reform conundrum

AT-KABUL: Representatives of a number of political parties have warned the government against holding the October elections with the ‘outdated’ and nonfunctional SNTV electoral system.

More than 35 political parties asked the government and the independent election commission to replace the system with the MRD system to hold a transparent election.

They claimed that the SNTV system was one of the reasons of the parliament’s inefficiency. They said that the joint committee of political parties found the MRD as the best system after precise searches, calling it very reasonable for the current political and social situation of the country.

They added that change in the electoral system was offered in the beginning of the national unity government that was the best system for fair and transparent election in which political parties could also take part.

The political parties had suggested the change of electoral system some six months ago, but it was not taken serious by the government.

They threatened to close electoral centers if the government did not pay attention to their demand.
