Reforms in electoral system within four months, says Barakzai

Abdul Zuhoor Qayomi-KABUL:  The Chairperson of Electoral Reform Commission (ERC) vowed to bring reforms in the electoral system within four months.

Shukria Barakzai told media-men that they commission will bring reforms in the electoral system through a transparent and unbiased procedure.

She said that the commission will bring the reforms in three phases within four months. “The ERC will devise a mechanism for brining drastic reforms in the electoral bodies,” she added.

She said that the commission will share their findings with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Afghanistan, Abdullah Abdullah, who will then submit them to President Ashraf Ghani. “Making changes in electoral laws and structure of the two electoral bodies— Independent Election Commission (IEC) and Independent Electoral Complaint Commission (IECC) — are in top of ERC’s agenda,” she went on as saying.

In response to a query, Barakzai said that the reform commission is not authorized to bring changes in leadership of the two election commissions, for based on constitution heads of the two bodies are being appointed for six years time.

This came at a time that Shukria Barakzai recently told a local news agency that the commission has already started its work. She said that the commission will find out those who were responsible for frauds in the past presidential elections.

She said that the commission is committed to bring drastic reforms in the electoral system, adding that people will witness the results soon.

The Electoral Reform Commission (ERC) was instituted just an hour before President Ghani and CEO Abdullah Abdullah left for the United States on Saturday.
