South Korea’s reaction to North’s ballistic missile launch

South Korea’s foreign ministry in a statement reacted to the recent ballistic missile launch by its rival North.

1. The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) conducted its fifth ballistic missile launch this year, on April 16, 2017. The Government of the Republic of Korea (ROK) condemns in the strongest terms this provocative action by the DPRK, as it once again clearly violates relevant UN Security Council resolutions and constitutes a serious threat to peace and security on the Korean Peninsula and the international community.
2. The DPRK exhibited various types of attack missiles in the military parade yesterday and today conducted a ballistic missile launch, in a threatening display to the whole world. The ROK Government warns once again that, if the DPRK conducts high-intensity strategic provocations such as the nuclear test and ICBM launch following those provocations, rigorous punitive measures will definitely be imposed, which the DPRK regime can hardly withstand. The ROK government is now cooperating closely with concerned countries in this regard.

3. Furthermore, the ROK Government will accelerate its efforts to enhance the ROK-US capabilities for extended deterrence, remaining steadfast in safeguarding the lives of its people and the security of the nation based on the strong ROK-US combined defense posture.
