Two Taliban insurgents killed by own explosives in Kabul

AT-KABUL: Two Taliban insurgents were killed by their own explosives while planting an improvised explosive device in Kabul province, an official said Sunday.

Fraidoon Obaidi, head of Kabul police criminal investigations, said the incident took place in Qarabagh district “earlier this morning”.

“The explosive went off as the insurgents panicked to escape with the arrival of the security forces to the area,” Obaidi said.

He added that the security forces defused another improvised explosive device planted by the insurgents in the same area.

The Taliban insurgents have not commented regarding the report.

Taliban insurgents frequently use improvised explosive devices as the weapon of their choice to target the security forces but the ordinary civilians are the most victims of such attacks.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) released the latest civilian casualties’ report earlier this month which stated high numbers of civilian casualties from the armed conflict.

“Between 1st January and 30th September, UNAMA documented 8,397 conflict-related civilian casualties (2,562 deaths and 5,835 injured) representing a one percent decrease compared to the same period in 2015. Ground engagements remained the leading cause of civilian casualties, followed by suicide and complex attacks, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs),” it said in a statement.

Separately, the security forces foiled a suicide attack plot by the Taliban insurgents on a police station in southern Kandahar province.

According to the local security officials, a suicide bomber was arrested before he could attack the police station of police district14.

Security situation has improved in Kandahar in the recent months but the Taliban insurgents have been attempting to carry out attacks as they continue to destabilize the southern provinces, specifically Helmand.

A policeman was killed and three other officers were wounded last week in a car bombing in Kandahar city after the explosion ripped through a convoy of the police forces in Police District 9.

The officials said the target of the bomber was the police chief of PD 9 who escaped the attack unhurt.
