US troops will stand with Afghan forces to fight terrorists, finish the mission: Carter

By Farhad Naibkhel-KABUL: The US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter in an unannounced visit to Kabul on Tuesday said that the US troops would continue support Afghan forces in anti-terrorism war and would finish the mission has been started.

“We will continue to work hard together with Afghan forces to finish the mission we started,” Carter said in a press conference with President Ashraf Ghani.

He said that the US and NATO forces will continue working under the title of peace and will continue the mission.

The U.S. forces’ presence in Afghanistan will enhance our ability to continue progress on our two central missions in Afghanistan, Carter added.

He said that Afghan forces are bravely fighting against terrorism.

“I have confidence in the ability of Afghan forces to provide for the security and stability that the Afghan people deserve,” he mentioned.

The US defense secretary said that it was a great pleasure that their allies intend to remain fully committed to the Resolute Support Mission.

“My visit was to Afghanistan was for three reasons, exceeding authority of Commander of US Troops and Resolute Support General John W. Nicholson, financial commitment for supporting of Afghan forces and presence of US troops up to 2017.”

The US Secretary of Defense said that General Nicolson’s authority has been exceeded and now he would visit battle ground and will help Afghans before Taliban raid.

He said that before general Necolson was waiting for request of Afghan forces, while they were in serious challenge, then helped them.

He said that 8,400 US troops will remain here to advice, train and support Afghans during mission and help Afghan in anti-terrorism war and Afghanistan not be terrorist hideout anymore.

The US Secretary of Defense said that US has worked in different fields including security with Pakistan.

“We believe that terrorism is a greater threat for Pakistan not neighboring countries, so we work together with Pakistan in the aspect,” he added.

The US forces will target terrorism leadership who can threaten US and its friends’ interests at any part of the world.

President Ashraf Ghani said that Warsaw commitment was a great opportunity for Afghan forces.

He said that without financial resources Afghan forces will faced challenges, so Afghan government pledges to be accountable and report about each dollar.

He insisted on reformation process in the system as well.

President Ghani said that “we strived hard, but it was rejected, so it is duty of Afghan government to follow constitution.”
