Wolesi Jirga urges govt to announce new defense minister-designate soon

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Wolesi Jirga urged the incumbent government to introduce its new pick for the Ministry of Defense (MoD) soon.

This comes at a time that Massom Stankzai, minister-designate for defense failed to get vote of confidence from Wolesi Jirga. The Jirga also previously rejected Sher Muhammad Karimi to become the minister of defense.

The deputy speaker of Wolesi Jirga, Muhammad Nazir Ahmadzai, said: “The government should introduce its minister-designate for defense before vocation of Wolesi Jirga.”

Ahmadzai voiced his regret over Stankzai’s failure to receive vote of confidence.

Atiqullah Amarkhel, a military expert, accused the Wolesi Jirga of selective approach in giving vote of confidence to cabinet picks.

“Leaders of the national unity government are busy in power sharing, and Wolesi Jirga has also adopted a selective approach in giving vote of confidence to defense minister-designate,” he said.
